Steering Wheel Free Play OOS Limits:
16" wheel → Manual: 4½"+ · Power: exceeds spec
18" wheel → Manual: 4¾"+ · 20" wheel → Manual: 5¼"+
21" wheel → Manual: 5½"+ · 22" wheel → Manual: 5¾"+

Steering Columns: Absence/looseness of U-bolts · Worn or faulty universal joints · Steering wheel not properly secured

Front Axle Beam: Any cracks · Any obvious welded repairs

Steering Gear Box: Any mounting bolt loose or missing · Cracks in gearbox or mounting brackets

Pitman Arm: Any looseness of arm or steering gear output shaft

Power Steering: Auxiliary power-assist cylinders loose

Ball & Socket Joints: Movement under steering load · Any motion other than rotational between linkage member and attachment point over 1/4"

Tie Rods / Drag Links: Loose clamp(s) or clamp bolt(s) · Any looseness in any threaded joint

Nuts: Loose or missing nuts in tie rods, pitman arm, drag link, steering arm or tie rod arm

🔴 SUSPENSION — OOS CONDITIONS · 49 CFR §393.207

Axle Parts/Members: Any U-bolt(s), spring hanger(s) or other axle positioning part(s) cracked, broken, loose or missing resulting in shifting of axle from normal position

Spring Assembly: One-fourth of the leaves in any spring assembly broken or missing · Any broken main leaf spring · Coil spring broken · Rubber spring broken · Leaf displacement that could contact a tire, rim, braked drum or frame · Broken torsion bar spring · Deflated air suspension

Torque, Radius or Tracking Components: Any part cracked, loose, broken or missing

🔴 FRAME — OOS CONDITIONS · 49 CFR §393.201

Frame Members: Any cracked, loose or sagging frame member permitting shifting of body onto moving parts or indicating imminent collapse · Any cracked, loose or broken frame member adversely affecting support of steering gear, fifth wheel, engine, transmission or suspension · 1½" crack or longer in frame web directed toward bottom flange · Any crack extending from frame web around the radius and into bottom flange · 1" crack or longer in bottom flange

Tire and Wheel Clearance: Any condition including loading that causes the body or frame to be in contact with a tire or any part of the wheel assemblies

Adjustable Axle: More than 1/4" of locking pins missing or not engaged · Locking bar not closed or locked

🔴 TIRES — OOS CONDITIONS · 49 CFR §393.75

Steering Axle Tires — OOS if: Less than 4/32" tread in any two major tread grooves · Breaker strip of casing ply showing in tread · Sidewall cut/worn/damaged exposing ply cord · Labeled "Not for highway use" · Visually observable bump, bulge or knot · Tire flat or noticeable leak · Mounted so it contacts any part of vehicle

All Other Tires — OOS if: Flat or noticeable leak · Bias ply: more than one ply exposed in tread or sidewall, or exposed area exceeds 2 sq. in. (both tires on duals must meet this) · Radial ply: two or more plies exposed or damaged cords evident, exposed area exceeds 2 sq. in. · Visually observable bump or knot · Contacts any part of vehicle including mate in dual set

Wheels & Rims — OOS if: Lock or side ring bent, broken, cracked, improperly seated, sprung or mismatched · Any circumferential rim crack except at valve hole · Disc wheel cracks extending between any two holes · Stud holes 50% or more elongated (fastened tight) · Spoke wheel: two or more cracks more than 1" long across a spoke or hub section, or two or more web areas with cracks · Tubeless demountable adapter cracks at three or more spokes · Fasteners: loose, missing, broken, cracked or stripped

Windshield Wipers — OOS if: Any power unit has inoperable parts or missing wipers that render system ineffective on driver's side · 49 CFR §393.78

🔴 BRAKES — OOS CONDITIONS · 49 CFR §393.40–.52

Hydraulic Brakes: No pedal reserve with engine running except by pumping pedal · Master cylinder less than 1/4 full · Power-assist unit fails · Brake hoses seep or swell under application · Missing or inoperative check valve · Hydraulic fluid visibly leaking · Hydraulic hoses worn through outer cover to fabric layer · Fluid lines restricted, crimped, cracked or broken

Vacuum System: Vacuum reserve insufficient to permit one full brake application after engine shut off · Hoses or lines restricted, excessively worn, crimped, broken or collapsed under pressure

Brake Lining: Minimum 1/4" brake lining — less than this is OOS · 49 CFR §393.47

🔴 LIGHTING DEVICES & FUEL — OOS CONDITIONS · 49 CFR §393.9 / §393.65

Lighting Devices — OOS if: Single vehicle without at least one headlamp operative on low beam and without a stop lamp on rearmost vehicle · Vehicle which does not have at least one steady burning red lamp on rear of rearmost vehicle visible at 500 feet · Projecting loads without at least one operative red or amber lamp on rear visible from 500 feet · At all times: no stop lamp on rearmost vehicle is operative

Safe Loading: Spare tire or part of load is in danger of falling onto roadway

Fuel System — OOS if: System with visible leak at any point · 49 CFR §393.65

Exhaust System — OOS if: Any system leaking in front of or below the driver/sleeper compartment where floor pan permits entry of exhaust fumes · Location of exhaust system likely to result in burning, charring or damaging wiring, fuel supply or combustible parts

🔴 COUPLING DEVICES — OOS CONDITIONS · 49 CFR §393.71

Fifth Wheels — OOS if: Over 20% of frame mounting fasteners missing or ineffective · Movement between mounting components observed · Mounting angle iron cracked or broken · Over 20% of fasteners on either side of mounting plates/pivot brackets missing or ineffective · Movement between pivot bracket pin and bracket exceeds 3/8" or pin missing/not secured · Sliders: more than 25% of latching fasteners per side ineffective, any fore or aft stop missing or not secured, movement between slider bracket and base exceeds 3/8" · Lower coupler horizontal movement between upper and lower fifth wheel halves exceeds 1/2" · Operating handle not closed or locked · Kingpin not properly engaged · Locking mechanism parts missing, broken or deformed

Pintle Hooks: Fasteners missing or ineffective · Frame cracked at mounting boltholes · Frame crossmembers providing pintle hook attachment cracked · Integrity: cracks anywhere in pintle hook assembly · Section reduction visible when coupled · Latch insecure

Safety Devices: Missing or unattached chains/hooks · Chains and hooks worn to extent of measurable reduction in link cross section · Improper repairs including welding, wire, small bolt rope and tape · Kinks or broken cable strands · Improper clamps

Saddlemounts: Any missing or ineffective fasteners, loose mountings, or cracks in stress/load-bearing member · Horizontal movement between upper and saddlemount halves exceeds 1/4"
